Greetings, I LOVE your website, philosophy and energy!
International Women's Day
International Womens Day
March 5, 2014
Join us for our 10th annual International Women’s Day celebration on Wednesday, March 5 at 6:00pm.
International Women’s Day (Saturday, March 8th) is a global celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women, past, present and future. Show your support by joining us for dinner. A smorgasbord of delicious homemade soups, fresh bread, and cookies will be provided. No host wine will also be available, and good cheer and conversation is always on the menu. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The suggested donation for dinner is $10. Proceeds from dinner will be donated to one local and one international charity. On the local front, the recipient of a portion of monies raised will be First Step Family Support Center, which provides family-centered programs that promote the healthy development of families through parent education and support services.
The International organization selected to benefit from the evening will be Madre, a unique women-led, women-run international human rights organization. Madre is dedicated to building real alternatives to war and violence by supporting the priorities of grassroots women’s organizations worldwide and linking them to the needs of women and families in the US through a people-to-people exchange of direct relief and understanding.
In addition, Kathy Charlton, owner of Olympic Cellars Winery, will also donate a portion of the wine sales for the evening to First Step and Madre.
Following dinner, Nita Lynn, Executive Director of First Step, will provide a brief presentation about the innovative and family-centered programs, services, support and education that First Step provides in Clallam County. A short video about the work of Madre will also be shown.
More about International Women's Day (March 8th) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries (China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria) as a national holiday.
IWD is when women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. Why: Suffragettes campaigned for women's right to vote. The word 'Suffragette' is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote. International Women's Day honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed. The first International Women's Day event was run in 1911.
Local "Gathering": IWD has been celebrated in Port Angeles and at Olympic Cellars since 2001. It began with a Gathering of Women and expanded to a Community Gathering. Homemade soup, bread and wine have been shared in the winery cellar along with music and information about local and international charities that benefit from the evening's donations.
