Celebrated at Olympic Cellars on Tuesday, March 8th, 2010 - 6:00pm

About International Women's Day

When:  Tuesday, March 8, 2011

Where: Everywhere!!!!! and at Olympic Cellars Winery, Port Angeles, WA

What:  International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries (China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria) as a national holiday.

IWD is when women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.  Official Website: http://www.internationalwomensday.com

Why:   Suffragettes campaigned for women's right to vote. The word 'Suffragette' is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote. International Women's Day honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed. The first International Women's Day event was run in 1911. 2011 is the Global Centenary Year

Local "Gathering": IWD has been celebrated in Port Angeles and at Olympic Cellars since 2001. It began with a Gathering of Women and expanded to a Community Gathering. Homemade soup, bread and wine have been shared in the winery cellar along with music and information about local and international charities that benefit from the evening's donations.

Women Supporting Women: Each year a suggested $10.00 donation will support a local and international charity which will be announced soon. In addition, Olympic Cellars will donate 30% of revenues from purchases of wine by the glass.

Additional information regarding this 100th Anniversary Celebration will be updated soon.

The celebration is open to the entire community. Daughters and sons… bring your parents!”
